Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater

August 20, 2011 at 7:34 pm (Stuff that Bugs Me Right Now) ()

So, you know that rhyme, right?

Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater

Had a wife and couldn’t keep her

So he put her in a pumpkin shell

And there he kept her very well

Am I the only one who, upon hearing that rhyme as a child, thought Peter had killed his wife and put her remains in a hollowed-out pumpkin?

Obviously there would be some dicing involved.

I’m the only one, aren’t I.

I’m pretty sure that’s actually the original meaning.

Well, according to this site, the pumpkin was a chastity belt.
      Which seems almost worse.
