Barfing ghosts, and other poetic wonders

October 22, 2015 at 10:57 am (Stuff that Bugs Me Right Now) (, )

At the funeral home here, we’re printing a memorial program for a man whose family selected a poem with the best stanza ever:

The intelligent and the brave
Open every closet in the future and evict
All the mind’s ghosts who have the bad habit
Of barfing everywhere.

That’s … that’s so beautiful, man.

So ... this guy lives in our brains, y'all.

That is pretty great. Any man whose family would select that for his memorial is someone I probably would like to have met.

…errrr, unless, that is, the poem is mean in solemn earnest. In which case, that’s just a damn weird choice of words.

It’s called “The Warrior,” and you had damn well better BELIEVE it is in absolute solemn earnest.
The original poet is a dead Persian guy, so … probably the translator’s fault?

I find that incredibly disappointing. And I mean “incredibly” literally, as I can’t quite believe how much that disappoints me.

Yeah, it sucks, but grieving people love terrible poetry.
